They did it. KSUT Public Radio and its supporters raised $1.5 million to match a $1 million challenge grant from the Southern Ute Indian Tribe to build a modern media center that will allow the station to expand local news and public affairs programming about and for the Four Corners.

Public radio fans will soon
be hearing more local news
2
00:00:03,350 –> 00:00:06,140
and public affairs programming
in the Four Corners,
3
00:00:06,140 –> 00:00:08,470
now that KSUT is broadcasting
4
00:00:08,470 –> 00:00:11,150
from its new state-of-the-art
media center.
5
00:00:11,150 –> 00:00:12,970
You’re watching the Local News Network
6
00:00:12,970 –> 00:00:16,730
brought to you by Serious
Texas Bar-B-Q and Fastsigns.
7
00:00:16,730 –> 00:00:18,660
I’m Wendy Graham Settle.
8
00:00:18,660 –> 00:00:22,040
For years, KSUT Public
Radio produced programming
9
00:00:22,040 –> 00:00:24,490
out of a crammed, outdated building
10
00:00:24,490 –> 00:00:26,570
that once served as a medical clinic
11
00:00:26,570 –> 00:00:29,930
for the former Indian
Boarding School in Ignacio.
12
00:00:29,930 –> 00:00:32,670
But cramped quarters and
antiquated equipment,
13
00:00:32,670 –> 00:00:36,630
limited what kind of programming
the station could offer.
14
00:00:36,630 –> 00:00:39,960
Now listeners can expect more local news
15
00:00:39,960 –> 00:00:41,810
and public affairs programming
16
00:00:41,810 –> 00:00:45,340
as well as an expanded
platform for native voices,
17
00:00:45,340 –> 00:00:50,340
with KSUT’s move into a new
$2.5 million media center.
18
00:00:50,580 –> 00:00:53,000
Named for local public radio pioneer
19
00:00:53,000 –> 00:00:55,870
and Southern Ute Tribal
member, Eddie Box Jr.,
20
00:00:55,870 –> 00:00:59,550
the new center includes two
on-air production studios,
21
00:00:59,550 –> 00:01:01,410
one for Southern Ute Tribal Radio
22
00:01:01,410 –> 00:01:04,290
and another for KSUT Public Radio.
23
00:01:04,290 –> 00:01:06,480
A studio for live performances,
24
00:01:06,480 –> 00:01:10,100
smaller production studios a
conference and meeting rooms,
25
00:01:10,100 –> 00:01:12,950
modern offices, and a multimedia center
26
00:01:12,950 –> 00:01:15,140
that will be used as a training facility
27
00:01:15,140 –> 00:01:18,840
for Native Americans
interested in media careers.
28
00:01:18,840 –> 00:01:20,610
Once we moved into the building,
29
00:01:20,610 –> 00:01:22,720
we knew our next phase of our plan
30
00:01:22,720 –> 00:01:27,043
was to increase our regional
public affairs, regional news.
31
00:01:27,964 –> 00:01:30,640
In the old building, we really
had very little capacity,
32
00:01:30,640 –> 00:01:33,070
very little space, we were
working on top of each other,
33
00:01:33,070 –> 00:01:35,420
had one little, tiny closet
for a production room.
34
00:01:35,420 –> 00:01:37,510
We now have three full production rooms,
35
00:01:37,510 –> 00:01:38,820
where we can produce content,
36
00:01:38,820 –> 00:01:41,970
meaning, again, local news, regional news,
37
00:01:41,970 –> 00:01:44,240
public affairs, you know,
38
00:01:44,240 –> 00:01:47,520
the kind of content that we had
been wanting to do all along
39
00:01:47,520 –> 00:01:49,410
but just didn’t have the
actual physical space
40
00:01:49,410 –> 00:01:50,700
to pull it off.
41
00:01:50,700 –> 00:01:55,050
KSUT first broadcast news
and information in 1976
42
00:01:55,050 –> 00:01:58,520
as an information service for
Southern Ute Tribal members.
43
00:01:58,520 –> 00:02:00,660
It expanded its reach in 1984,
44
00:02:00,660 –> 00:02:03,370
when it became a National
Public Radio affiliate
45
00:02:03,370 –> 00:02:06,600
and organized as an independent nonprofit.
46
00:02:06,600 –> 00:02:08,690
14 years later, its split its signal
47
00:02:08,690 –> 00:02:10,470
to offer Native American programming
48
00:02:10,470 –> 00:02:12,680
as Southern Ute Tribal Radio
49
00:02:12,680 –> 00:02:14,590
and to offer public radio programming
50
00:02:14,590 –> 00:02:17,450
as Four Corners Public Radio.
51
00:02:17,450 –> 00:02:20,850
Plans for new a station have
been in the works for years,
52
00:02:20,850 –> 00:02:23,350
but it wasn’t until the
Southern Ute Indian Tribe
53
00:02:23,350 –> 00:02:26,170
offered the nonprofit a $1 million
54
00:02:26,170 –> 00:02:28,290
all-or-nothing challenge grant,
55
00:02:28,290 –> 00:02:30,540
that fundraising took off.
56
00:02:30,540 –> 00:02:34,000
Members, listeners,
businesses and foundations,
57
00:02:34,000 –> 00:02:38,560
contributed the remaining 1.5
million to start construction.
58
00:02:38,560 –> 00:02:41,670
As a result of its new
expanded facilities,
59
00:02:41,670 –> 00:02:44,720
the station has partnered
with Rocky Mountain PBS
60
00:02:44,720 –> 00:02:47,250
to produce a series called “Native Lens”,
61
00:02:47,250 –> 00:02:49,010
and another with native youth
62
00:02:49,010 –> 00:02:51,880
to gather oral histories from elders
63
00:02:51,880 –> 00:02:54,600
for a show called “Native Braid”.
64
00:02:54,600 –> 00:02:56,670
Graham says she hopes the media center
65
00:02:56,670 –> 00:02:58,050
will become a catalyst
66
00:02:58,050 –> 00:03:01,080
for even more media
partnerships in the future.
67
00:03:01,080 –> 00:03:03,500
We’re all about collaboration
and partnerships,
68
00:03:03,500 –> 00:03:06,750
it only makes sense in a region where
69
00:03:06,750 –> 00:03:09,580
it’s often referred to
as a news desert, right?
70
00:03:09,580 –> 00:03:14,023
Where we could use a lot
more, just like you are doing,
71
00:03:15,460 –> 00:03:16,990
people that are creating local content
72
00:03:16,990 –> 00:03:21,320
that’s by, and produced
from, people in our region.
73
00:03:21,320 –> 00:03:23,640
And so we’re excited about partnering,
74
00:03:23,640 –> 00:03:25,200
as we’re doing with Rocky Mountain PBS.
75
00:03:25,200 –> 00:03:26,340
We’re working on a partnership with
76
00:03:26,340 –> 00:03:28,070
Fort Lewis College and KDUR,
77
00:03:28,070 –> 00:03:32,240
and Indigenous Native
American students up there,
78
00:03:32,240 –> 00:03:34,150
providing training and opportunities
79
00:03:34,150 –> 00:03:36,330
for them to be heard on an NPR affiliate.
80
00:03:36,330 –> 00:03:39,000
So, some really exciting things starting
81
00:03:39,000 –> 00:03:41,180
to happen now that we’re in this new home.
82
00:03:41,180 –> 00:03:42,740
Although Graham led the charge
83
00:03:42,740 –> 00:03:44,860
to build and open the new media center,
84
00:03:44,860 –> 00:03:48,820
she says public radio fans are
the true heroes in this saga.
85
00:03:48,820 –> 00:03:51,840
Community members, businesses
and the Southern Ute Tribe
86
00:03:51,840 –> 00:03:54,240
really came together in
a incredibly unique way
87
00:03:54,240 –> 00:03:55,450
to make this happen.
88
00:03:55,450 –> 00:03:56,810
Southern Ute Tribe Radio
89
00:03:56,810 –> 00:03:59,990
broadcasts at 91.3 FM in Ignacio,
90
00:03:59,990 –> 00:04:03,270
89.7 in Northwest New
Mexico in the Navajo Nation,
91
00:04:03,270 –> 00:04:07,100
and 100.9 on the Ute Mountain
Ute Indian Reservation.
92
00:04:07,100 –> 00:04:08,720
Four Corners Public Radio broadcasts
93
00:04:08,720 –> 00:04:11,080
at 90.1 in the Durango area,
94
00:04:11,080 –> 00:04:14,060
88.1 in Farmington in
Northwest New Mexico,
95
00:04:14,060 –> 00:04:16,900
and 106.3 in Montezuma County.
