A local Girl Scout wanted to inspire girls to reach for the stars. And she wound up inspiring more than 300 professional women as well.
You’re watching the Local News Network. Brought to you by Express Employment Professionals and Boon’s Family Thai BBQ. I’m Wendy Graham Settle. When Farmington Girl Scout, Claire McDaniel, set out to earn a Silver Award, she decided to write a book about women leaders in San Juan County. She hoped to inspire other girls in her community to become leaders too. And as a result of her work, she wound up inspiring an audience of 300 or more professional women at the Farmington Chamber of Commerce Professional Women’s Summit, held in October. The Silver Award is the highest honor that a sixth, seventh or eighth grade Girl Scout can earn. She must work on a 50 hour community service project that will make a difference in her community. Claire decided to interview 29 women leaders in San Juan County, and compiled their stories in an anthology that she had published and delivered to area schools for other girls to read.
That way we understand how others make a difference in people’s lives, and we understand why they do what they do, and why they love what they do.
One of the women that Claire interviewed was Jamie Church. The Farmington Chamber of Commerce, Executive Director. Church was so impressed with Claire, that she invited Claire to speak at the 3rd Annual Professional Women’s Summit. Claire wowed the audience and surprised Church by reading a quote from her interview.
Jamie Church said, “It’s my responsibility, it’s your responsibility, to make our community a better place. We don’t need to sit around and complain about things in our community. But what we should try to do is to make things better coming up with solutions instead of complaining. We should figure out how we can be part of the solution.”
Claire is a freshmen at Piedra Vista High School. Does she want to become a professional writer in the future? No, she says she wants to become a scientist.
