The 40th annual Chocolate Fantasia is Thursday, September 17th from 6:00 to 9:00 PM at the La Plata County Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall. The event features a chocolate contest with entries from local chefs and community members, a silent auction, wine, beer and appetizers, and live music. The event raises money for Volunteers of America, Colorado, which provides shelter, meals, and support services for people experiencing homelessness or fleeing domestic violence in Southwest Colorado. Purgatory Resort hosts its annual Oktoberfest Saturday, September 19th from noon to 4:30 PM at the base area. There will be seasonal beers from several local and regional breweries, plus non-alcoholic options along with pretzels and brats. Aiko Aiko Sound plays from noon to 2:15, followed by Black Diamond Breakdown until 4:30. Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door, and they include a 19-ounce stein and your first pour. Shaw Solar is sponsoring a free shuttle from their location on Highway 3, leaving at 11:30 AM. You do have to register ahead. And the Durango Autumn Arts Festival runs Saturday and Sunday, September 19th and 20th from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM on East 2nd Avenue between 7th and 10th. Now in its 32nd year, the fundraiser for the Durango Arts Center brings in fine arts and crafts from makers across the country and draws in an estimated 8,000 visitors.
