00:00:00,000 –> 00:00:03,570
With half a million
people dead from COVID-19,
2
00:00:03,570 –> 00:00:05,970
the wait for a granite or marble headstone
3
00:00:05,970 –> 00:00:07,780
can take several months or more.
4
00:00:07,780 –> 00:00:10,660
And the rock is surprisingly expensive
5
00:00:10,660 –> 00:00:13,780
but Lillywhite Stone, a
rock yard in Farmington
6
00:00:13,780 –> 00:00:17,540
is offering a faster,
less costly alternative.

You’re watching The Local News Network
8
00:00:19,230 –> 00:00:21,920
brought to you by express
employment professionals
9
00:00:21,920 –> 00:00:24,030
and CMIT solutions.
10
00:00:24,030 –> 00:00:25,980
I’m Wendy Graham Settle.
11
00:00:25,980 –> 00:00:29,450
Sandstone, it comes mostly
from Arizona quarries
12
00:00:29,450 –> 00:00:32,340
in different colors,
sizes, and thicknesses.
13
00:00:32,340 –> 00:00:35,500
Owner, Ross Lillywhite says
the native population here
14
00:00:35,500 –> 00:00:37,930
prefers sandstone memorial markers
15
00:00:37,930 –> 00:00:41,190
over marble or granite
because it’s familiar stone
16
00:00:41,190 –> 00:00:43,239
that’s found throughout the reservation.
17
00:00:43,239 –> 00:00:47,570
Well, a lot of it has to do
with the coloring as well,
18
00:00:47,570 –> 00:00:52,109
you know, matches the environment
and looks like something
19
00:00:52,109 –> 00:00:54,660
that come out of that local hills.
20
00:00:54,660 –> 00:00:56,910
But sandstone is a great choice for anyone
21
00:00:56,910 –> 00:00:59,890
who’s lost a loved one
because of its affordability,
22
00:00:59,890 –> 00:01:02,200
natural beauty and majesty.
23
00:01:02,200 –> 00:01:05,840
The wait time for a
headstone at Lillywhites?
24
00:01:05,840 –> 00:01:07,640
Couple weeks normally.
25
00:01:07,640 –> 00:01:09,590
Right now we’re running into a problem
26
00:01:09,590 –> 00:01:14,173
and that because Texas,
there’s the mass material.
27
00:01:15,349 –> 00:01:19,690
It’s been on back order,
it’s been, been crazy so…
28
00:01:19,690 –> 00:01:22,560
The rubberized mask or
template of lettering
29
00:01:22,560 –> 00:01:24,830
and designed for the face of the headstone
30
00:01:24,830 –> 00:01:27,850
is glued to the surface then sandblasted.
31
00:01:27,850 –> 00:01:29,910
Finally, the headstone is finished
32
00:01:29,910 –> 00:01:33,560
by inserting rebar on the
bottom for easy installation.
33
00:01:33,560 –> 00:01:36,360
You can choose to keep
the jacket natural shape
34
00:01:36,360 –> 00:01:38,540
or have it cut to perfection.
35
00:01:38,540 –> 00:01:40,640
Lillywhite Stone, a family run business
36
00:01:40,640 –> 00:01:44,110
since 1969 charges $5 a letter,
37
00:01:44,110 –> 00:01:46,660
depending on its size,
a medium to large marker
38
00:01:46,660 –> 00:01:49,333
costs on average $350.
39
00:01:50,240 –> 00:01:53,512
It’s a very inexpensive
way to have something
40
00:01:53,512 –> 00:01:57,429
that expresses yourself
and your home, whatever
41
00:02:01,356 –> 00:02:02,787
or your loved one.
42
00:02:02,787 –> 00:02:06,450
Sandstone may not last as long as granite
43
00:02:06,450 –> 00:02:08,950
but after so many hundreds of years,
44
00:02:08,950 –> 00:02:10,720
does it really matter?
45
00:02:10,720 –> 00:02:13,490
