With only two games under their gym shoes so far this season, the Demon Girls Varsity Basketball team hasn’t let the restrictions of the pandemic prevent them from giving their all, especially since the team has six seniors who’ve been playing together since second grade. Sponsored by First Southwest Bank, Durango Hot Springs, Durango Dental, CyroMedSpa, and Four Corners Eye Clinic.

00:00:11,330 –> 00:00:13,110
To say that the Durango High School
2
00:00:13,110 –> 00:00:15,900
Girls Varsity Basketball team is tight,
3
00:00:15,900 –> 00:00:17,550
would be an understatement.
4
00:00:17,550 –> 00:00:19,144
With six seniors on the team, you’d expect
5
00:00:19,144 –> 00:00:22,160
that four years of
experience playing together,
6
00:00:22,160 –> 00:00:24,840
would make for well executed plays.
7
00:00:24,840 –> 00:00:27,500
But in this case, the seniors actually
8
00:00:27,500 –> 00:00:30,790
have been playing together
as a team since second grade.
9
00:00:30,790 –> 00:00:34,150
And they hope that experience
and longtime teamwork
10
00:00:34,150 –> 00:00:36,320
will carry them to the
Colorado High School
11
00:00:36,320 –> 00:00:38,552
Activities Association’s 4A Playoffs
12
00:00:38,552 –> 00:00:40,584
for the State Championship.
13
00:00:40,584 –> 00:00:43,640
It definitely helps growing up together
14
00:00:43,640 –> 00:00:45,144
and playing the game we love together.
15
00:00:45,144 –> 00:00:47,254
Definitely!
16
00:00:47,254 –> 00:00:49,688
We just, you can tell when we play
17
00:00:49,688 –> 00:00:53,010
that we play as a team and we
play as a family basically.
18
00:00:53,010 –> 00:00:55,320
And so it doesn’t get better than that.
19
00:00:55,320 –> 00:00:57,200
We work together to
accomplish all our goals,
20
00:00:57,200 –> 00:00:58,450
which is like really fun,
21
00:00:58,450 –> 00:01:00,290
versus individual where you’re all alone
22
00:01:00,290 –> 00:01:02,160
and you kind of are on your own
23
00:01:02,160 –> 00:01:04,648
to figure out what you have
to do to win or whatever.
24
00:01:04,648 –> 00:01:07,976
But you know, you have people to rely on
25
00:01:07,976 –> 00:01:10,780
and they always have your
back and we love each other.
26
00:01:10,780 –> 00:01:12,440
So, that’s what I love about it.
27
00:01:12,440 –> 00:01:14,590
I’ve been playing, like
I said, with these girls
28
00:01:14,590 –> 00:01:17,250
for a long time where I
feel like we know each other
29
00:01:17,250 –> 00:01:19,670
on a different level and
you can see it on the court.
30
00:01:19,670 –> 00:01:20,720
We just know where we are.
31
00:01:20,720 –> 00:01:22,216
We know how another person plays.
32
00:01:22,216 –> 00:01:25,560
There’s just a certain
level of connectedness.
33
00:01:25,560 –> 00:01:27,832
And I think that really only comes with
34
00:01:27,832 –> 00:01:30,540
playing this difficult
sport for that many years
35
00:01:30,540 –> 00:01:31,672
with the same girls.
36
00:01:31,672 –> 00:01:34,450
Rowland, Cuntz, and McManus
37
00:01:34,450 –> 00:01:38,250
say the pandemic has injected
uncertainty this year,
38
00:01:38,250 –> 00:01:40,550
but their long-time
experience playing together
39
00:01:40,550 –> 00:01:42,500
definitely gives them an advantage
40
00:01:42,500 –> 00:01:44,056
during a shortened season.
41
00:01:44,056 –> 00:01:47,900
The Demons are scheduled to
play only 14 games this year,
42
00:01:47,900 –> 00:01:49,992
compared with the usual 24.
43
00:01:49,992 –> 00:01:53,820
It’s been very strange
and interesting, you know,
44
00:01:53,820 –> 00:01:55,208
with the masks and stuff.
45
00:01:55,208 –> 00:01:57,430
We’ve definitely had to prove ourselves,
46
00:01:57,430 –> 00:02:00,060
and you know, our determination to play.
47
00:02:00,060 –> 00:02:01,420
You know, the people that want to play
48
00:02:01,420 –> 00:02:02,340
obviously want to be here
49
00:02:02,340 –> 00:02:03,912
and the people don’t, they aren’t here.
50
00:02:03,912 –> 00:02:06,540
So it really just shows
our dedication to the sport
51
00:02:06,540 –> 00:02:08,392
and how we want to do going forward.
52
00:02:08,392 –> 00:02:11,250
You know, more than anything,
I think we’re just happy
53
00:02:11,250 –> 00:02:12,728
we get the opportunity to play.
54
00:02:12,728 –> 00:02:15,790
Even under these weird
circumstances, you know?
55
00:02:15,790 –> 00:02:18,180
The masks make it
difficult, but I don’t think
56
00:02:18,180 –> 00:02:20,560
there’s anything we wouldn’t
do to have the opportunity.
57
00:02:20,560 –> 00:02:21,432
So it’s been great!
58
00:02:21,432 –> 00:02:25,160
Obviously there’s some little
bumps we have to overcome,
59
00:02:25,160 –> 00:02:27,720
but nothing we can’t do
if we do it together, so.
60
00:02:27,720 –> 00:02:30,350
No matter whether they win or lose,
61
00:02:30,350 –> 00:02:32,370
team members say the fun in the game
62
00:02:32,370 –> 00:02:35,520
is about doing your best,
learn from your mistakes,
63
00:02:35,520 –> 00:02:37,120
and get ready for the next play,
64
00:02:37,120 –> 00:02:40,359
because it’s coming right at
you in this fast-paced sport!
65
00:02:40,359 –> 00:02:41,490
One important thing
66
00:02:41,490 –> 00:02:43,340
is always uplifting each other.
67
00:02:43,340 –> 00:02:45,670
And a big part of basketball
is always moving on
68
00:02:45,670 –> 00:02:46,620
to the next play.
69
00:02:46,620 –> 00:02:48,120
Everyone’s going to make mistakes.
70
00:02:48,120 –> 00:02:50,210
And I think every single girl
71
00:02:50,210 –> 00:02:52,071
on the team has had that moment,
72
00:02:52,071 –> 00:02:53,877
or those certain plays
where you’re just like,
73
00:02:53,877 –> 00:02:56,103
“Wow, she is a really
good basketball player.”
74
00:02:56,103 –> 00:02:58,590
And I’ve seen that with every
single one of my teammates.
75
00:02:58,590 –> 00:03:00,450
So when those moments do happen,
76
00:03:00,450 –> 00:03:02,170
just being as encouraging as possible,
77
00:03:02,170 –> 00:03:04,620
and clapping, and let’s do it again,
78
00:03:04,620 –> 00:03:05,870
like next play, do it again.
79
00:03:05,870 –> 00:03:07,530
And when it doesn’t go well,
80
00:03:07,530 –> 00:03:10,270
when you air ball a shot,
being there and supporting them
81
00:03:10,270 –> 00:03:12,440
and reminding them how good they are.
82
00:03:12,440 –> 00:03:14,710
It’s just that one moment,
everybody makes mistakes.
83
00:03:14,710 –> 00:03:16,100
Michael Jordan made mistakes.
84
00:03:16,100 –> 00:03:19,390
So you just got to be as
encouraging as possible.
85
00:03:19,390 –> 00:03:20,311
It’s really important,
86
00:03:20,311 –> 00:03:22,690
especially because of how
mentally tough the sport is.
87
00:03:22,690 –> 00:03:24,360
If you start getting down on yourself,
88
00:03:24,360 –> 00:03:26,536
then you’re stuck in a rut.
89
00:03:26,536 –> 00:03:30,230
Good lessons for life,
not just basketball.
90
00:03:30,230 –> 00:03:33,590
And with that, we wish
the Demon Girls Basketball
91
00:03:33,590 –> 00:03:36,140
and Coach Tim Fitzpatrick the best of luck
92
00:03:36,140 –> 00:03:38,136
in their quest for a State Championship
93
00:03:38,136 –> 00:03:42,750
to cap off a 10-year career
of team spirit and comradery!
94
00:03:42,750 –> 00:03:45,253
I’m Wendy Graham Settle
for the Demon Spotlight.
