An Antique Mall with a Modern Vibe

When spring cleaning inspires spring shopping, we suggest you stop at A Beautiful Mess, an antiques, crafts, and collectibles store, located in the ginormous former Skateland building on East Main Street in Farmington. A Beautiful Mess, owned by Mendie Terry, is a collection of booths that artisans and antique collectors rent monthly to sell their wares.

So, the motto is a mess because we do old, it has to be 25 years or older, brand new, handmade, or refurbished. So, we have ladies that make signs or we have people that sell new items, make soap, but I do a lot of refurbishing of the furniture, but then we also sell a lot of new. So, there is some antiques, but it’s a mess of stuff ’cause that’s what I like.

It’s an antique mall of sorts with a modern vibe. Holidays are fun to experience at the store. This time of year, it’s decked out for Easter. There’s an amazing variety for those looking for something slightly unusual, chosen or made by 25 different vendors.

There’s one thing that I have noticed about this store, and a lot of people, especially when they get older, they need need something to do, something fun, and so we are like this little family. And so, even if they don’t make a ton of money, it’s a good place for them to be, it keeps them busy, and we just have a great time. So, I think that’s why this works is because it’s a bunch of women and men that need something on the side to do and have hobbies and interests and it’s a good place for them to sell. And, yeah, it’s just a great little family that I got going on here and we love each other here at the Mess and our customers.

Terry left the old Wallace Furniture store in downtown Farmington four years ago because she wanted to own her own space instead of just renting, and what a space it is.

It used to be a roller skating rink, which is really fun because I hear all the stories about, “How I had my first kiss in there,” or, “I met my husband there,” or, “I used to work there “and I could hang out with the cool kids, “even though I was a poor kid.” So, I’ve heard some really fun stories about this place. And it has like a good vibe, I think, because it was a happy place. People came to have fun.
