The Colorado Department of Transportation has begun construction on US Highway 550 on Coal Bank Pass, and the community foundation serving Southwest Colorado will host two interactive workshops for nonprofit leaders. You’re watching the “Local News Roundup” brought to you by the FLC Center for Innovation. I’m Sadie Smith. The Southern Ute Bear Dance Celebration returns to Ignacio. According to the Southern Ute Drum, the Bear Dance is one of the oldest recorded dances in North America in its history traces back to the 15th century. The Bear Dance gathers tribal people together for the springtime return of the bear from hibernation, a symbol in celebration of life. The event kicks off Friday, May 23rd at 10:00 AM with the Bear Dance Corral blessing at the Bear Dance grounds located between Ute Road and Highway 251 and Ignacio. The Southern Ute Bear Dance Powwow will be at the Sky Ute Casino Resort Event Center. The drum contest includes a total payout of $30,000 and the dance contest includes a total payout of $25,000. To wrap up the weekend’s events, the Bear Dance feast will be offered at 12:00 PM at the Bear Dance grounds. The Southern Ute Tribe welcomes visitors, but be sure to adhere to the dress code. Photography and videography are strictly prohibited and no pets of any kind will be allowed. Visit the Southern Ute website for additional details. Drivers can expect traffic delays this summer on US Highway 550 between Coal Bank Pass and Silverton. The Colorado Department of Transportation started two construction projects on Monday, May 12th with work continuing through the fall. CDOT crews will replace a wall at Mile point 56.9 just north of the Coal Bank Pass summit and will stabilize a hillside at mile 59.3 near Deer Creek. Work will take place between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM, Monday through Friday with occasional work on Saturdays. Drivers can expect two traffic signals and delays of up to 20 minutes. The Community Foundation serving southwest Colorado in the Colorado Nonprofit Association will host two interactive workshops for nonprofit leaders at TBK Bank in Durango. The first workshop titled Beyond Governance: Building A Thriving Board Staff Relationship will be held from 1:00 to 4:00 PM on Tuesday, June 17th. It focuses on communication strategies, role clarification, and relationships between board members and staff. Registration is $50. The second workshop titled Board Leadership Bootcamp will be held from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Wednesday, June 18th. This session targets both new and experienced board members and covers govern fundamentals, judiciary duties, conflict mitigation, and engagement strategies.
