Durango Responds to Sydney Terror Attack With Menorah Lighting

This year’s Hanukah didn’t start like most, most are peacefully with family, with traditions. But this year we started on a much worse note, a devastating attack from Australia. And that was just the first night of Konica.

But we lived in Menorah. I thought of the 15 people who were killed, not for any crime, but just for being Jewish and just for celebrating their heritage and identity.

Sunday morning we woke up to the devastating news from Sydney, Australia, where terrorist attacked, targeted a public conica menorah lighting just like the one we’re gathered here today. For among the victims, we Rabbi Ellie Schlanger of Leviton, both Haba rabbis and dear colleagues doing what Jews have done for thousands of years, bringing light into the world.

The same night we were planning a manure lighting just like the one in Sydney. Rabbi Schlanger is Haba rabbi and a colleague of mine. So really this, this attack could have happened to anybody. This could have happened to us. It was beautiful to see so many Jews come out. Jews of all stripes and colors all coming together for the same Hanukkah event, all as one, all united. And that’s the best response we could have to hate and terror.
