Hello! My name is Trever Nyx and I am running for La Plata County Coroner. The County Coroner across the state is responsible for investigating and determining the cause and manner of death in sudden, unexpected and violent incidents. With that information, we work with local state, and national agencies to ensure our community remains a safe place to live. We’re available 24 hours a day to work with families and loved ones to help them navigate through this difficult time. I’m seeking the position of County Coroner here in La Plata County because the current Coroner is retiring, and I feel that I can bring a positive, updated change to the office. I have been a Deputy Coroner for eight years. I am a Colorado State Certified Death Investigator a two time, nationally Certified Medical Legal Death Investigator recognized by the American Board of Medical Legal Death Investigators and the Death Investigation Academy. I’m also an associate member of the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners. What sets me apart from my opponent? This is a hard question for me, because I’m not much of a person to say, hey, look at me. But I feel I need to answer your question. and one of the things is the state of Colorado requires the elected coroner to be ABMDI certified in counties with a population over 150,000 people. La Plata County has roughly 65,000 people, but I have been ABMDI certified since 2024. I have management and leadership experience that I learned during my decade in the United States Army. I have an open mindset to new ideas that allows for growth, and I embrace technology. Changes to the La Plata County Coroner’s Office. I would like to bring the coroner’s office up to date with national standards and death investigations. I hope to seek to become an accredited office with the International Association of Coroners and Medical Examiners. The first thing I really want to change, if elected, is implementing a secure, encrypted, corner based case management system that ensures privacy is maintained and evidence is preserved in a high quality format. The biggest challenges Coroners face, and I think this is across the nation. The biggest one would be budgets. Everybody experiences budget cuts. And how do you how do you implement good investigations with less money? So that’s definitely one thing that we struggle with. The the other is is working with families that they don’t want to hear. I guess how their loved one died in a in a bad way and difficult to to help them understand, you know, this is the truth. And it’s difficult because they don’t want to hear that. They want to hear everything was fine. But sometimes sometimes it’s not fine. And that’s it’s hard to work with families that like that sometimes. That would depend. My favorite thing to do outside of work would depend on the season. I hate the extreme heat and I hate the extreme cold. So during those times, I’m usually at home in my in my home office doing graphic design or playing a video game every once in a while. If the weather’s just right though, I love being outside, working in the yard or or in my shed, just tinkering with with various projects.
