Adam Deitch, the drummer for Lettuce, Break Science, John Scofield, Pretty Lights, and other music acts and ensembles, was in town for Telluride Jazz Festival last weekend. Local News Network caught up with Deitch to ask him about his performances at the festival and Lettuce’s Miles Davis tribute. One of the hardest working musicians on the circuit, Deitch keeps up a grueling tour schedule, but when he’s not performing he has also started teaching, and his online drumming lessons are available at DeitchAcademy.com.

– My parents are funk fans, so I grew up very much in Earth, Wind and Fire, Tower of Power. My mom taught music kindergarten through fifth grade for 30 years, and my dad taught music in college for 10 years straight. So they’re just the best at explaining music in a way that people can understand and not trying to complicate it. So I kind of learned from them in how to explain it. You have to really know it to explain it simply. Today was DTF, it’s a new trio, you know, great artist, Sam Fribush on organ, Ari Teitel on guitar, two amazing younger musicians that are pushing my old self to new heights. And then tomorrow I’m playing with the great Julian Pollack, who goes by J3PO. And he’s just a master keyboardist, pianist, and synthesizer master. And he plays with Herbie Hancock. At first, when Telluride said, “Hey, we’d love you to play Miles,” we were like, “Well, I don’t know.” But then we already have a Miles album out, and then we found a bunch of other Miles that’s like even closer to what we play anyway. So it makes all the sense. Thank you to whoever thought of that at Telluride Jazz, thank you for the opportunity to pay tribute to Chief. I play with John Scofield, and when he was in Miles’ band, they called him Chief.
– Oh, interesting.
– Yeah. So, you know, we’re going to pay tribute to Chief. If you go to www.lettucefunk.com, it’s got all the Lettuce dates, all our tour dates, and we’re pretty heavy on the road, so tell your friends and bring the party over and come hang out with Lettuce on tour. If you’re not here, get here next year.
