Durango Food Bank was selected to receive 40,000 pounds of donated food from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as part of a nationwide initiative delivering 250 truckloads to 250 food banks across the country. Half of the donation is headed to Pagosa Springs, with the rest supporting La Plata County and partners in Silverton and at Fort Lewis College.

Durango Food Bank received 40,000 pounds of donated food from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints as part of America 250’s America Gives Initiative. You’re watching the local news network brought to you by Dunkin Donuts and Durango Pizza. To celebrate America’s 250th birthday, the church donated 250 truckloads of food to 250 food banks across the country. Durango Food Bank was selected as one of those recipients.
We look for organizations that are doing great work that are meeting the need. La Plata County has a huge need for those who are experiencing food insecurity, and Durango Food Bank was just the right fit. It just made sense. Durango Food Bank does fantastic work and the reach that they have is, is absolutely incredible.
We are super excited to be selected as the recipient of one of the America 250 trucks coming in from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This is a huge honor for our community and we’re so excited to see this food going beyond just the doors of the Durango Food Bank.
The truckloads of food donations came from church members who fasted once a month and donated the value of those meals.
The source of this food comes from members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who choose to fast once a month, abstaining from food or drink for a period of 24 hours and sharing the monetary value of that, those meals with the church.
Half of the truckload will be sent to Our Community Eats in Pagosa Springs for distribution throughout Archuleta County. The rest will support Durango Food Bank with portions also shared with food assistance efforts in the Silverton area and Fort Lewis College’s Grubhub Food Pantry.
We are able to store here in this facility a lot of the product until it’s actually needed so we can distribute it in smaller quantities to these other pantries who may not have the capacity to store it all at once. And so we’re really excited to receive the donation in such a large volume and then be able to send it out in smaller case lot quantities to agencies as they need it.
