San Juan Basin Public Health Announces Closing Date

Two Durango Board of Education Members received recognition by the Colorado Association of School Boards last month. San Juan Basin Public Health will close on December 31st, with the Plata County Public Health and Archuleta County Public Health providing public health services to the individual counties. Two Durango School District 9-R Board of Education Members received the Colorado Association of School Board’s McGuffey Award last month. Members Erika Brown and Kristin Smith were announced as honorees for the award, which recognizes individuals who bring commitment and passionate service to board member work, go above and beyond their role, and actively serve their community. San Juan Basin Public Health will close December 31st this year. La Plata and Archuleta Counties will now be responsible for providing public health services to their individual counties as part of the closures, which was voted and decided on in 2022 by the County’s Board of Commissioners. La Plata County Public Health will begin providing services in January 2024 and will be a source for environmental, health, maternal, child health programs, vital records, consumer protection, harm reduction services, and more. All current services and events offered and supported by San Juan Basin Public Health will continue through December. Snowmaking activities started last week at Purgatory Resort, with a planned opening date of November 18th. The goal is to have a solid base for the 2024/25 ski season. The annual local event will be Friday, December 1st this year, and businesses interested in free promotional material are encouraged to sign up by November 10th. Noel Night highlights local retailers and is a partnership of Local First Durango Business Improvement District, Main Avenue businesses, and “The Durango Herald.” Interested business owners should sign up online, and the event and promotions are not limited to Main Avenue businesses, so sign up.
